You Have A Dream, So Now What?

by Stephen Mills on May 29, 2012

Note from Stephen: I’ve been taking a break from posting.  Here is a guest article by  Mario Taylor II, Co-Author of Plan “B” Sucks: Work on Your Dreams, Not Your Boss’s

If I told you to meet me at the bank because I was going to give you a check for $10 million dollars, hopefully your first question is, “How do I get there??!!”

Why? Because anytime you want to get somewhere you have never been, you seek direction. If you choose to get there without directions you may get lost or not even try to go at all because you have no idea where to start. The exact same question should be used when you want to achieve something, especially your dreams.

Take this real world example: Craig Hurovitz, a psychologist at the University of Hartford, led several studies that showed people born without the ability to see reported no visual imagery in their dreams, only a heightened sense of smell, taste and touch.

Think about it like this: How can you fulfill something you cannot define? How can you become something you have never seen? It is impossible! The first step to achieving a goal is to find out who may have done it already (or at least who has done something similar). Yes, you will need to do some research. No matter how obscure you think your goal may seem, from selling chocolate covered ants to breeding and selling pigeons, information is out there.

Let me give you an example:
Preston’s dream is to become a doctor. The first thing he thought to do was to speak with someone who is already a doctor. Fortunately, his favorite uncle is a doctor, so he just gave him a call to ask him some questions. “Do you love what you do?” “What kind of doctor are you?” “How many years of schooling did you go through to be where you are now?” “Where did you get started?” Etc…

But, let’s say Preston didn’t have a favorite uncle who was a doctor…he still could get those same questions answered a different way. He could use the internet to find his answers. Granted, he would have to go through a lot of information, but by doing so it may open his eyes to things he would not have thought to ask.

Remember, “There is nothing new under the sun.” So more than likely whatever you want to do someone has already done it or at least tried in some form or fashion. This should be very encouraging NOT discouraging because now you know that there is a possible blueprint for what you want to do. Your job now is to do your homework aka MAVEN UP!

Really nice article. At some point in my life I chose to start following my dreams and not waste even a single day and never tire. It is either I make it or die trying.

Sometime dreams will help us to pursue without thinking the consequences but as long you have the determination to achieve it, you will really have your dreams in life. I really believe on that.

Great, simple, advice. Know where you are. Know where you want to. Figure out how to get there and take small, consistent, steps in that direction.

You’re right. Going on top of that, people don’t set specific enough goals. “I want to lose weight” has less of a execution rate that “Lose 10 pounds by July 31st”. And as you touched upon, the Internet has information for anyone, from breeding and selling pigeons to health information. It just takes a while to sort some of it out!

Great insights. “If he can do it, why can’t I?” I definitely agree with you about this
topic. What is a great way to encourage people to pursue their dreams? Thanks a lot for sharing!

I had this dream from a very young age up to my late teen years. I always brought home stray wild kittens, and hurt birds and another animal I could get my hands on.

Great post. If you have a dream, you must find ways to reach your dream. Indeed, I have a dream to reach and I am still striving hard every day to reach my dream in the near future. It is important to have always hope and determination to achieve a dream.

your blog just gave me the opportunity to wake up and see the big picture. I think my only problem is not looking forward to something that matters the most or not have a dream at which I can accomplish. But I have to say you wrote an excellent post.

When I have a dream, I will make sure to reach this game. In fact, I have a dream and I want to achieve this dream. Now, I am still striving to reach this game and hopefully someday I will reach this game.

If you have a dream so pursue on your dream. It is better to pursue and strive hard to achieve your dream since this is the only way to achieve it.
