Hi Stephen! This should be really interesting - if I'm already an email subscriber, I'll get this, too right?

I don't know a whole lot about neuroscience but I have read a small bit, mostly relating to how infants and small children's brains develop. It is amazing and awesome in the literal sense of the word.

I totally agree. I guess what I was thinking was that we shouldn't let the lack of scientific evidence stand in our way. On the other hand, we do want to take full advantage of it when it does exist.

@Jonathan, Good morning! I agree about always knowing anyway. But there is an additional benefit to the scientific research. And that is that you can use it to to your advantage because there are many things that are not obvious. There are many techniques that are highly dependent upon the exact manner in which the brain functions.

There are many people in the self-development world who over time have developed exceptional methods that really work. It's funny because I often find myself disagreeing with them on why they work, but I love them anyway because their techniques do work.

I think Jack Canfield is incredibly effective with his methods and at the same time naive about why they work. I'm sure he has a different opinion about that and of course if I were a bystander I would go with the odds and take Jack. But just because he has proven incredibly successful with his methods of success principles, doesn't mean he understands science. The whole subject fascinates me. I love the debate as long as it doesn't get in the way of the actual implementation of success principles that do work. Jack is one of my heros and I have bought a lot of his stuff.

Knowing exactly why something is working can take you to that next level, or at least take you there more quickly. It allows you to tweak your techniques to get the most out of them. I feel like I've written a whole new post here! :-)

Nice article Stephen,

As with many other functions, the phrase “use it or lose it” also applies to our cognitive abilities. Our highly adaptive nature enables us to channel substantial resources in the direction of our focus. Learning, and then applying what we learn stimulates an even greater capacity for learning and applying. It’s always nice to have the backing of scientific research, but with or without it the benefits of continued learning have always been obvious to those with the brain cells to notice. Nice introductory article to an exciting new category.
