Some Days You Just Don’t Have It

by Stephen Mills on August 7, 2009

For three days I’ve been trying to figure out what to write a blog article about.  When I look at my list of ideas, nothing excites me.  I have nothing profound or interesting to say.  It’s really been bugging me.  I’ve been looking at material trying to come up with something that grabs me.  Nothing does.

I’ve got nothing today.  I had nothing yesterday or the day before.  Well, big deal.  I guess some days you just don’t have it.  I haven’t had it for three days now.

What was my solution?  Write a short article saying I had nothing to write about.  I feel like I just cheated on a test.

I know what you’re talking about.
What I do against such days is plan ahead. I registered an account at http://www.tadalist.com and made lists of posts that I want to make.
I have an idea for a Music series, for example, I created a separate list for that.
I have an idea for a Simplicity series, separate list.
I keep guest posts in a separate list, and so on.
Also, I have a main list, called “So Will Do”, after my blog, where I keep the ideas for articles that do not belong to any of the mentioned categories.
At the moment I have 26 articles planned ahead.
You might give it a try, I don’t think that it only works for me.

I wish you luck,
Zoli.

We’ve all been there, and to be honest, I’m in the same situation for Monday. Fortunately, I’ve become better at not stressing too much when the idea well starts running dry. As I’m sure you know, stressing about it just makes it worse.

I’m sure the brainstorming you’re doing will lead to some great new material and I look forward to reading it. 🙂

Stephen,
I’ve been there. For me, some days, if I don’t have anything, I just simply don’t write. In fact, since I began, I have modified my schedule to basically post when it feels “right”. Maybe that means I lose some people, maybe not. For me, though, it’s what works. And it works, because I have to feel a connection with what I write (not everyone is this way…and that’s just fine). Anyway, I don’t see this as cheating. I see it as honesty, and that’s pretty great quality to have…

I recently came across your blog and spent a few days reading almost every article. You are a great inspiration and motivator and I’m sure your mind will bring forth many new ideas to write about very soon. Thanks for the great motivation you’ve provided me and I look forward to many good future articles.

I still enjoy reading your thoughts, even if your thoughts are that you’ve got nothing. What do I think? I think you need a break! Enjoy the weekend, go out and live, don’t read others’ blogs for a few days, clear your head. Something authentic and meaningful will bubble up to the surface and your next post will rock. 🙂

hahaha… that’s great Stephen…. i was wondering when this might happen. Jodi is right.. this is a perfect time to just relax. How about stay off the computer….. and enjoy the family and just “be”. Everyone deserves that sense of peace once in a while. You are definitely not cheating us or yourself. The greatest think about your blog… is that it is not much different than if we are talking face to face. Enjoy the respite…..talk to you when i get back 🙂

Hey Stephen, don’t worry about it!

If someone told me that I needed to write 86 different posts on my blog, each unique and inspiring I would freak out and say it’s impossible, yet over the stratch of a year that is the amount of posts I have managed to write.

I already have an idea for my next posts, what I do is even when I get a remote thought of an idea for a post I make a note of it, so that sometime in the future I can write a post about it:)

Enjoy the weekend, relax, spend some time with the family, go to the gym, you’ll get inspiration soon enough:)

Peace!

Stephen, I experienced the same thing at one point this last year. Before that I was writing two articles a week and posting them on Sundays and Wednesdays. Then I started posting just on Sundays with an occasional Wednesday article if inspiration hit. Like you, at one point, I even considered writing an article like this but I didn’t.

All of the advise that you have received here is valid. Do what works for you. I do read a lot of other blogs and sometimes that is where I get my inspiration for my next article. Sometimes I write articles giving out Link Love like when I pointed out your blog to my readers. I love sharing my favorite blogs with my readers.

I go through the same thing, Steve. My husband encouraged me to write about breaking my toe last week- I declined on that one. 🙂

But last week was just not a writing week for me. Often I have started articles and save them so I can come back to them at another time but again last week wasn’t one of those times.

We all have days like that, it’s normal and you should not feel bad at all. Try and have a few posts scheduled for later use or in drafts status.
