For me, focusing on one thing at a time gives me intense headaches. If I don't distract myself with running lyrics to songs, etc. while I'm working, it's completely unbearable. I have a lousy memory, which might be related to this, but can't figure out what to do. It may be a weird synthesia; thinking/planning ahead makes me dizzy as well.

Hi Stephen

Excellent series - thank you.

I find for me what works the most in optimizing my mind is definitely staying conscious. It is amazing what we can maintain or retain if we are conscious of it, our thoughts are uncluttered, vs the opposite of just letting life happen to us and reacting.

Your advice and all the points you mention is gold! This is something too I knew when I used to teach students, in why people have moments of "blank out" on tests, presentations, etc. All ties into what you wrote about here. Thanks again.

For me, exercise really helps. If I read after exercising, I tend to remember it, but if I just sit down to read, I tend to fall asleep.

Hi Vin, I find the scientific studies on how your performance decreases under these various circumstances very informative because subjectively I don't always see it. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Stephen,

I think "chunking" is a great way to improve efficiency without bringing undue stress. Supposedly, frequently changing your focus from one subject to another is a source of stress, and as you mentioned, it makes it harder to remember things as well.

I'm glad you included diet and exercise. :)

I really loved reading Part I and II of this topic. I actually struggle a lot with my memory sometimes (too many things going on in my mind at once!) so this was great to read. Thanks!
